Everyone in West Texas is familiar with prickly pear. It is ubiquitous on rangeland, along roadways and even in landscapes. For many, it is a troublesome nuisance. For others, it is a staple source of food in their native diet. Yes, almost every portion of prickly pear is edible. During the course of the year, it produces beautiful flowers and sweet tasty fruits. Well adapted to our climate and soil in West Texas, prickly pear is a true native species and makes a great addition to any water-wise landscape design.
